Happy Saturday, Toledo! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening today in Toledo.

Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:

  1. The Ohio State Highway Patrol chased a stolen U-Haul vehicle through Toledo along I-475 that eventually fled to the state of Indiana on Monday. The suspect was finally apprehended after the Indiana State Police used stop sticks to destroy three of the vehicle's tires. (13abc Action News)
  2. Local Toledo bakery Jera's Heavenly Sweet has started baking cakes for children in foster care for their birthdays. Owner Jera Stewart and her daughter Brianna Stewart are sharing their philosophy of paying it forward and helping children feel special as they cope with difficult circumstances. (WTOL)
  3. The hundreds of Ohio National Guard members who were sent to assist Lucas County hospitals last month are wrapping up their service as COVID numbers lessen. St. Vincent bid goodbye to the service members on Saturday, and ProMedica expects things to return to normal staffing practices on February 22, when elective surgeries are set to return. (WTOL)
  4. The Steak 'n Shake on Reynolds Road is under new ownership and is introducing the use of touch screens in the place of traditional servers. The new method, which has been implemented at all locations throughout the country, will help address issues with hiring. (Toledo City Paper)
  5. The Toledo Police are increasing the number of officers for its next training class after an unexpectedly high number of officers left last year. Funds from the American Rescue Plan Act will be used to install a new ShotSpotter system in East Toledo to further address safety concerns after the city saw a homicide record set in 2021.   • The University of Toledo is hosting the 2022 Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design Virtual Summer Camp June 22-24. Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades have much to look forward to as last year's successful event involved 94 students from 73 different cities in the U.S. and a panel of seven cosmetic companies.   • 20-year-old UToledo student Liam Walsh has a six-page resume touting his academic and social achievements, including serving as president of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega and student manager of the Student Green Fund. Walsh continues to balance his many responsibilities with his studies in political science and law and social thought. (Press Release Desk)
  • The Toledo Symphony will host world-famous ensemble Canadian Brass February 18 & 19 at the Toledo Museum of Art's Peristyle Theater. Part of the ProMedica Masterworks Series, tickets are available for in-person and livestreaming attendance. (bgindependentmedia.org)
  • Sparky's Donuts is gathering donations for Pilgrim Church and Help Feed Toledo Area Mobile Food Pantry. Anyone who brings in a donation will receive a free donut: one per customer per day. (WNWO NBC 24)
  • Jack Velandra of South Toledo is the victim of an online scam after attempting to purchase a motorized scooter to assist with his mobility health issues. Unfortunately, Velandra's predicament is not unique as the Federal Trade Commission reports consumers lost $770 million to social media fraud in 2021. (WTOL)
