Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:

  1. 22-year-old Ofari Smith, who was on the run since the fatal stabbing of Whitney Wade on March 1, was apprehended in Adrian, Michigan according to Toledo Police. U.S. Marshalls took Smith into custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest. (WTOL)
  2. Galen Artez Steele led Toledo Police on a car chase while a woman and three children, including an infant, were in the car around 12:30 AM Wednesday. Steele crashed at Corbin and Willys and is facing charges of DUI, endangering children, and eluding police. (WTVG)
  3. The UToledo Rockets women's basketball team advanced in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Wednesday. UToledo bested the Ohio University Bobcats 80-67 and will next play either Northern Illinois or Ball State Thursday morning.(cleveland.com)
  4. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced a program to replace every customer lead service line in Toledo. Dubbed the Customer Lead Line Replacement Program, the project will reportedly cost $10 million and residents in the historic Old West End neighborhood have expressed their approval. (WTVG)
  5. Two UToledo basketball coaches have been re-signed with the Rockets through the 2026-2027 after both secured Mid-American Conference titles this year. Coaches Tod Kowalczyk and Trica Cullop led both teams to the MAC Tournament this weekend and are hoping for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. (WTOL)

  • UToledo student Anya Smith has been researching the benefits of pet and animal therapy for dementia patients, including working with a 4-month-old potbellied pig named Wilbur.
