Tigers, Barton Roll Over Brunswick, 42-21

Barton scores six times to lead Tigers to victory

has had an exceptional 2011 season, but even he couldn't have imagined the performance he and the rest of the Tigers displayed on Thursday night.

Twinsburg (5-2) easily defeated Brunswick (5-2), 42-21, Thursday night. Barton was the star of the night, scoring six total touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a convincing victory over the Blue Devils.

Following an early fumble deep in Brunswick territory, Twinsburg rebounded nicely by moving down the field in six plays to take the lead on a 23-yard touchdown run by Barton. The Tigers extended their lead to 14-0 on the ensuing one-play drive, in which Barton took a toss sweep 72 yards down the visitors' sideline for his second touchdown of the quarter.

Brunswick answered early in the second quarter, when junior quarterback Dan Yohman snuck in between his guard and center and into the endzone, cutting Twinsburg's lead to 14-7. The Tigers weren't fazed though, as junior quarterback Jalen Washington engineered an eight-play drive that culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Barton. The two teams entered halftime with Twinsburg leading, 21-7.

The Tigers blew the game wide open in the third quarter, when Barton skirted two defenders and galloped 93 yards down the Twinsburg sideline to score his fourth touchdown of the game.

"I just tried to be patient, I didn't expect it, but I kind of just made a couple of guys miss," Barton said. "I just saw the opening and hit it. Our receivers did a good job blocking; they've done a great job all season."

"I've always known we were capable of offensive games like this," Barton said.

The ground attack continued for the Tigers later in the third, when Barton touched the ball six straight times before taking the seventh carry around the left side into the endzone for touchdown number five.

"He's a special back," Twinsburg head coach Joe Schiavone said. "John's ability to run the ball as effectively as he does makes it easy for our offensive staff to say 'You know what, give the ball to John.'"

Barton obviously didn't win the game by himself, and he made sure to acknowledge his teammates after the game.

"It's easy when you've got big holes right there to run through," Barton said. "I know it's kind of cliche, but the o-line did a great job."

"Our offensive line continues, week in and week out, to do their job and they're the unsung heroes," Schiavone said. "John doesn't need much, but some of the holes our offensive line was making were really nice holes."

Barton rushed for 195 yards just on scoring plays alone and recorded his sixth touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Washington. When asked how it felt to score six touchdowns in one game, his response was simple.

"It feels good man," Barton said.

Barton increased his total rushing touchdown mark to 21, and the Tigers extended their winning streak to three games.

"When we play four quarters, we're pretty darn good," Twinsburg head coach Joe Schiavone said.

Twinsburg will host Solon on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
