County Will Spray for Mosquitoes Thursday Night
The Summit County Health District will begin spraying at 8:30 p.m.

If you are getting tired of mosquitoes attacking you relentlessly this summer, relief may be in sight.
The Summit County Health District will be spraying for mosquitoes in Twinsburg Thursday night.
The department sets traps throughout the county and the mosquitoes are tested for viruses in Columbus. While the bugs are tested, they use the number of mosquitoes collected to determine which areas to spray and when, said the health district’s Andrew Deacon.
“If we get to the point where we’re catching a lot of mosquitoes in an area, we’ll set them up on the spray schedule for the following week,” Deacon said.
The trucks will usually begin the process at 8:30 p.m. when the mosquitoes are most active. They use a combination of mineral oil and pesticide to target mosquitoes and midges (small mosquito-like bugs). Deacon said the truck leaves a 150-foot-wide cloud that will cover both sides of the road, killing the insects as they’re flying.
“That’s when they’re the most active,” Deacon said. “But that’s also when people are active too, so we have to be careful.”
He said the process can take anywhere between three to six hours.
The county won’t spray in areas where residents have asked them not to or in areas that have designated bee hives, so they won’t harm them.
