Federal court halts Ohio ban on out-of-state petition circulators

A federal court ruled Wednesday that Ohio cannot enforce a ban against non-Ohioans circulating petitions in the state.

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Watson issued a preliminary injunction that enjoins Secretary of StateJon Husted from enforcing S.B. 47’s limits on initiative and referendum rights.

As a result, groups like Ohioans for Workplace Freedom and Freedom Ohio are free to hire out-of-state petition circulators to gather signatures for their proposed amendments to the Ohio Constitution.

Ohioans for Workplace Freedom seeks a right-to-work amendment and Freedom Ohio wants an amendment “granting two consenting adults the right to marry regardless of their gender.”
