Remembering 9/11: Twinsburg Plans to Join National Moment of Remembrance on Sept. 11

City wants to honor those affected by Sept. 11 attacks by joining remembrance ceremony

When Twinsburg City Council meets tonight for a special meeting, the topic won't be the typical legislation.

The city wants to express its support of and honor those whose lives that were deeply affected by the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, by joining the National Moment of Remembrance. The event is in honor of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Mayor Katherine Procop said she heard of this resolution through the National League of Cities and thought it would be a terrific way for Twinsburg to show its support.

"I want our residents, safety forces and workers to all realize the administration and council know the impact this had on us all," Procop said. "It's important for us all to gather and commemorate."

The resolution calls for the institutions of the United States to join together on Sept. 11, 2011, by encouraging a moment of remembrance at 1 p.m. and lasting one minute.

The moment of remembrance encourages people to stop working or other activities and "marking the moment in an appropriate manner including ringing bells, blowing whistles, or sounding sirens."

In 2009 President Barack Obama designated Sept. 11, 2011, as "National Day of Service and Remembrance" under the Serve America Act.

The city will also display flags and banners that day and a special ceremony, "Gathering of Remembrance," will be held by the and the Western Reserve Community Band at the Perici Ampitheater (behind ) at 2 p.m.
