Twinsburg Looks for State Funding in Improvement Projects

The city's engineering department will apply for loans and grants to help pay for future projects

The city will go after almost $800,000 in grants and loans to help pay for three improvement projects around Twinsburg.

City Council unanimously approved three pieces of legislation Tuesday night that would allow the city to apply for funding from the Ohio Public Works Commission for the projects over the next few years. The application deadline is the end of June.

City engineer Amy Mohr said they want to be able to do more with less money on these projects.

“By applying for these loans we’re trying to get the biggest bang for our buck,” Mohr said.

One project aims to replace the storm sewer and reconstruct the roads at Cobblestone Drive, removing fill from the road that contains high levels of calcium. Mohr said they will replace the storm sewer with a plastic pipe to remove the major buildup.

The project has a $1 million price tag and the city will apply for half of that through a grant and a no-interest loan. Construction could begin by July 2012 if funding is approved.

Mohr will also apply for two 30-year, no-interest loans for repairs at Darrow Road and a project at Serene Court and Belmeadow Drive.

On Darrow Road, the city hopes to repair the sanitary sewer system between Tinkers Creek Lane and Tinkers Creek before the Ohio Department of Transportation resurfaces the road in 2015.

“Maintenance is out there pretty frequently flushing the line,” Mohr said. They project will replace two manholes and some pipeline and the city hopes to receive 50 percent of the $175,000 project to begin in 2012.

The sanitary sewer system at Serene and Belmeadow will be replaced with the help of the 50 percent loan for the $442,000 project. Mohr said they have to flush that one more than most others because it is so deep and constantly backed up. Work wouldn’t begin until 2013 if approved.
