2 Days Of Vehicular Mayhem In Westlake

Three incidents on roadways kept police busy last week. Someone fired five shots from a passing car, a utility pole was taken out and more.

WESTLAKE, OH — Impaired and violent drivers caused a massive ruckus in Westlake over the last week of September. Police investigated an incident where someone apparently fired a gun while driving on I-90, arrested a man for driving with a bong and a loaded .380 handgun in his car, and cleaned up after a woman hit a utility pole while driving.

All in all, it was a busy end of the month for the department. The incidents started piling up on Sept. 23 when Rocky River Police and Westlake Police were asked to keep an eye out for a white Kia going west on I-90. The driver of the car was reportedly weaving around and nearly hit the caller's car.

The driver did knock over a traffic cone in a road work area. Police stopped the car and arrested the driver, a 22-year-old Lorain man. Police found a bong and a loaded .380 handgun in the man's car. The next day, Sept. 24, an officer on patrol heard five gunshots while driving through the Detroit-Columbia roads intersection. The shots were also heard by a Bay Village officer on patrol and residents at a nearby motel.

Officers located five shell casings for a .40 caliber gun. It is currently believed the shots were fired from a vehicle as it drove. The Ohio Department of Transportation is checking surveillance footage from a nearby intersection for evidence.
