22 Hilliard Elementary Students Publish Poems

WESTLAKE, OH — Hilliard Elementary is now home to 22 published poets.

Students from the school had their works published in the hardcover anthology Poetic Power, a quarterly poetry contest sponsored by Creative Communications. Hilliard Elementary also earned a Poetic Achievement Award for its efforts.

In December, Eric Vankek's fourth-grade students wrote original poems for submission to the contest. Twenty-two of those submissions were selected for publication. More than 50 percent of Hilliard Elementary's submissions were selected for publication.

Only a small selection of schools received the Poetic Achievement Award, including Hilliard. The award is given to school that excel in teaching the Language Arts.

All of the submissions were judged by published writers or educators in the elementary, secondary and higher education system. Poems were judged on literary merit, creativity and social significance.
