CLEVELAND - University Hospitals (UH) Eye Institute continues growing with the addition of five physicians to its medical staff. The physicians will provide services at UH Westlake Health Center, 960 Clague Road, and other UH sites.
The new physicians and their areas of expertise:
Danielle Alperin, OD, whose clinical and research interests are contact lenses, including scleral lenses, orthokeratology and soft lenses for keratoconus; primary eye care; refractive surgery evaluations; use of anterior segment OCT on contact lens fitting, and use of confocal microscopy on corneal infection resolution.

Dr. Alperin received her doctorate in optometry from The Ohio State University and completed her residency in cornea, contact lens and refractive surgery at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. She is a member of American Academy of Optometry; American Optometric Association; Ohio Optometric Association; Scleral Lens Education Society, and Beta Sigma Kappa.
Atif Collins MD, who has been appointed to the Eye Institute and Department of Plastic Surgery. He specializes in oculoplastics, reconstructive surgery, and neuro-ophthalmology and will be a part of the new Center for Oculoplastics and Neuro-ophthalmology. (Oculoplastics involves surgical procedures dealing with the eye socket, eyelids, tear ducts, and the face.) Dr. Collins earned his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and did his residency at UH and Case Western Reserve University. He then went on to a two-year oculoplastics, orbital, and reconstructive surgery and neuroophthalmology fellowship at Ohio State.

In addition to his clinical practice in oculoplastics and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Collins will work closely with the Plastic Surgery Department to develop and lead an aesthetics practice and participate in this capacity in the new Wellness Center within the Eye Institute encompassing vision exams, contact lenses, refractive surgery, and ocular aesthetics. He will also lead the neuro-ophthalmology service later this year.
Husband and wife Florin Grigorian, MD, and Paula Grigorian, MD - Both natives of Romania, they did their initial medical and ophthalmology training there and then emigrated to the United States for further education in pediatric ophthalmology.
Dr. Florin Grigorian attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas City, Mo., and completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology in Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Ill. His clinical and research interests are general pediatric ophthalmology (strabismus, amblyopia, cataract), pediatric retina conditions, eye complications of neurofibromatosis, eye electrophysiology (ERG), new technologies in pediatric ophthalmology (OCT, Icare tonometry).
Dr. Paula Grigorian completed a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. She went on to do another ophthalmology residency at the University of Arkansas and then joined the pediatric ophthalmology service at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics.
At University Hospitals, she has joined the Center for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus as a pediatric ophthalmologist and adult strabismus specialist.
Her research and clinical interests are in pediatric cataracts; pediatric strabismus and ambliopia; adult strabismus, and genetic diseases of the eye.
Pankaj C. Gupta, MD, whose clinical and research interests are Boston kratoprosthesis; penetrating kratoplasty; anterior segment imaging, and descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty.
He attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, and did his residency in ophthalmology at the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He did further training at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, and completed a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass, and a masters in clinical and translational sciences at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Ga.
He is a member of the American Medical Association; American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and Cornea Society.

The institute’s highly trained physicians hold full-time faculty appointments at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and oversee activities of the Visual Sciences Research Center and Visual Sciences Training Program. Its translational research collaborations involve more than 40 investigators across 10 disciplines and the department is one of the top ranked in the country in research funding by the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute. Major areas of research include cataract, corneal inflammation and infections, diabetic retinopathy, genetic eye diseases, macular degeneration and other retinal degenerations.
The Eye Institute also is home to two state-of-the-art image reading centers – the Retinal Disease Image Analysis Reading Center and the Cornea Image Analysis Reading Center – that provide imaging data for both federal and corporate clinical trials across the country.
