Effective Leadership Academy’s Presence Grows in Lorain County with New Elyria Chamber Leadership Academy Program

New summer leadership program for Lorain County teens to network with professionals and learn leadership skills

Effective Leadership Academy’s Presence Grows in Lorain County with New Elyria Chamber Leadership Academy Program

ELYRIA, OH. July 19, 2017 -- It’s time to turn Lorain County into a classroom for success. The Effective Leadership Academy (ELA) - a Warrensville Heights-based non-profit organization, is partnering with the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce to create a leadership academy experience for Elyria teenagers chosen by Elyria Teens Achieve Success (ETAS). This new week-long leadership program, which begins on July 24, will be run similarly to ELA’s successful Beachwood Chamber Leadership Academy and Warrensville Chamber Leadership Academy programs. Students will learn about leadership in a corporate setting by visiting different sites throughout Elyria and Lorain County, with a different theme each day. A few of the themes include government, sales and marketing, health and wellness, manufacturing, and others.

The leadership sponsor for the program is the Nord Family Foundation, an Amherst-based that endeavors to build community through support of projects that bring opportunity to the disadvantaged, strengthen the bond of families, and improve the quality of people’s lives. Other features of the program include multiple tours of facilities around Lorain County, a meeting with Elyria Mayor Holly Brinda, and panels of business leaders. The expert panels will include Elyria government officials, University Hospitals representatives, and local small business owners who will speak to students about their stories and experiences with leadership.

Elyria Mayor Holly C. Brinda, a supporter of this program and of youth leadership training in general, said, "Mentoring our community's future leaders is an important step to our future success. It is incumbent upon those in leadership positions to help nurture our young people and expose them to opportunities to learn, grow and see the possible."

In addition to meeting local business leaders, students will receive leadership training with ELA’s widely successful curriculum and facilitators. ELA is a youth leadership and personal growth organization that helps young people turn potential into performance by developing their most valuable assets - themselves. ELA promotes positive leadership by teaching students to think outside the box, have an open mind, and embrace change. ELA will also work with students on professional skills, such as making a good first impression, communicating effectively, learning how to network, along with other essential 21st Century leadership skills.

Flo Brett, executive director and founder of ELA states, “This program allows young people to not only learn valuable self-leadership skills, but also network with corporate professionals as they consider future career options. We are grateful to have many corporate sponsors and individuals who are investing in our future leaders.” Brett was inspired to create these youth programs while working as a business consultant in England, where she saw many professionals who lacked the skills and traits to lead their teams. She realized skills such as personal leadership, individual character awareness, effective communication and networking skills needed to be developed early and utilized during one’s entire life, not just in the professional world.
