Impaired Driver Sheared Utility Pole From Base: Westlake Police

WESTLAKE, OH — An impaired driver crashed into a utility pole and knocked power lines to the ground this month in Westlake. Crews spent hours cleaning up the debris and restoring the utility lines.

The crash happened April 12 at 11:30 p.m., police said. Numerous callers alerted police to the accident, saying a vehicle had hit a utility pole near Detroit and Cahoon roads.

When officers arrived they saw that several power lines had been knocked to the ground. The vehicle had sheared the utility pole completely from its base, police said. Power company crews were called to the scene to deal with the wires.

The driver of the car was a 50-year-old Westlake man. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation but was also charged with operating a vehicle impaired, police said.

The roadway near Detroit and Cahoon was closed for several hours. Crews had to remove and clean-up debris and then restore the utility lines.
