Lee Burneson Artists Rock The Statue Green

Four seventh-graders made it into the top 100 in the contest to celebrate the Statue of Liberty's 125th birthday.

Four seventh-graders placed in the top 100 in the international Rock the Statue Green Contest. The contest, held by the French Embassy in honor of the Statue of Liberty's 125th birthday, challenged students to create a replica of Lady Liberty with recycled materials.

Out of the 4,000 entries from the U.S., France and other Francophone countries, Abriha Abuhamdeh, Sarmad Al-Aish, Robert Picard and Noor Tamim placed in the top 100. Al-Aish was even among the top 65 semi-finalists. All four are students in Luda Grossman's world language class.

Adbuhamdeh and Al-Aish made their sculptures out of recycled clay, while Picard used recycled soda cans, and Tamim used cereal boxes.
