National School Gun Walkout: No Protest At Westlake Schools

A spokesperson said students are not currently planning a walkout on March 14. Instead, students will use their voices in other ways.

WESTLAKE, OH — While schools across the nation and the region will see varying levels of protest from students on March 14, a spokesperson for the Westlake Schools told Patch students are not currently planning a walkout. Other districts will see students walkout of school for 17-minutes, in honor of the 17 people killed in the Florida school shooting, and to protest for stricter gun laws.

Students and the administration are working together to figure out what March 14 will look like at Westlake High. Some students will be writing letters to Congress after school and more activities may take shape, but no actual walkout is currently planned.

"Our students are in action mode now," the spokesperson said.

Students at Westlake High reportedly walked out of school in late February, according to Fox 8. The protesters were again lobbying for stricter gun laws.

Other school districts in Northeast Ohio are already talking about how they will handle the planned protests. Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights-University Heights school systems have said they will support students that walkout. Beachwood Schools are planning a joint-event between students and administrators that will commemorate those lost in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman High School. Lakewood Schools have said they want to have a teachable moment on March 14.
