Robert R. Cavano, 87, Past President of The City Club of Cleveland

The Westlake resident led several agencies designed to improve neighborhoods, health care and fair housing.

Robert R. Cavano served as president of The City Club of Cleveland in 1976, was a MetroHealth Medical System trustee from 1986-1998 and headed the Commission on Catholic Community Action’s Housing Task Force in the 1960s.

The Westlake resident, who died July 23 at age 87, was also a past president of the trustees of the Merrick House in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, Greater Cleveland Neighborhood Centers Association and The Cuyahoga Plan fair housing organization. He was elected president of the Rowfant Club in 1989.

The Center for Health Affairs honored him for his contributions to health care in Northeastern Ohio in 1998.

Cavano attended East High School in Cleveland, graduated from what is now Case Western Reserve University in 1947 and did two years of graduate work in mathematical statistics at Columbia University.

During World War II, he served in the Army Signal Corps in the European and Pacific theaters.

After retiring in 1989 as chief of the L.A. Lux Company, a manufacturer of water treatment chemicals, Cavano founded the Scranton Associates consulting firm. He relocated his firm to larger facilities in Strongsville in 2008.

Cavano, who had a keen interest in Santo, the religious folk art of Spanish and Portuguese colonies, belonged to The Print Club of Cleveland and The Society for Contemporary Art.

Survivors include his children, Robert R. Jr., Lee A., Peter C., Loran J., and Elizabeth A.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and brother, John P. His wife of 61 years, Elizabeth V. (Lux), is deceased.

Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at , 25620 Center Ridge Road.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 20141 Detroit Road, Rocky River.
