School Resource Officer Surprised With Hoopla
Staff and students organize assembly to show appreciation after so much negative press toward law enforcement.

(Originally posted on Dec. 27, 2016) WESTLAKE, OH — Scott Fortkamp was prepared to settle some kind of issue at West Lake High School on Dec. 20, his last day as the school's resource officer and students' last day before winter break, when he was summoned to the school rotunda.
The cop, the school resource officer for 16 years and a member of the Westlake Police Department for 21, was relieved to find there was nothing to be concerned about. And he was surprised, too.
The WHS Show Choir staged a flash mob, singing "We All Need a Hero" and the "Ghostbusters" theme song.

That wasn't all. The marching band played "Hang on Sloopy" — a reference Ohio State University fans understand — and continued to play as the band led him through the hallways for a final time and back to the rotunda, where he was given a medal, a wooden box of thank-you notes and basket filled with greeting cards, an Ohio state Mug and other gifts.
