Westlake High Student In National Geography Challenge
Junior Kyle Yu returns to the US Geography Olympiad and hopes to secure his spot on the 2017 Team USA roster.

WESTLAKE, OH - Kyle Yu, a junior at Westlake High School, is once again heading to the US Geography Olympiad (USGO). The event will be held in Arlington, Virginia on April 21.
Yu qualified last year for the event at the Junior Varsity level and earned the individual first place trophy in the USA Olympiad. This year, Yu took a written qualifying exam with gifted specialist Anne Dill in early March. To qualify for the USGO event, students needed to finish in the top half of all participants in the National Qualifying Exam in their division, or in the top half of scores across the country.
“Kyle’s goal is to make the USA International Team and have the opportunity to attend the World Olympiad,” Dill said in a statement.

Varsity students at the national championship will have to participate in a three-part challenge. Students will take a 40-minute written exam, a 75-question multiple choice exam focusing on conceptual questions, and a map skills exam consisting of seven to nine sets of questions. The top four Varsity students will constitute Team USA at the 2017 International Geography Olymiad in Belgrade, Serbia in August.
