Westlake High Students Learn to Stay Healthy

The eighth annual Wellness Day offered information on nutrition, diabetes, sleep and more.

l students got a chance to explore preventative health measures at the eighth annual Wellness Day on Tuesday.

The health fair featured a variety of local organizations.

offered blood pressure screenings and a cardiac health activity. Reike and tuning fork therapy, along with art therapy were available. Other displays focused on the dangers of texting, nutrition, cycling and more. The Farmland Countryside Conservancy Program, along with two WHS students, will included their poster project on “Where Food Comes From," which was presented at the Botanical Garden’s Ripe Fest.

Fairview Hospital offered a finger stick glucose test. With the continuing increase in both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, this could be an important test for some. The hospital also had displays on breast and testicular health.

During the day, students attended different presentations on the importance of sleep, leadership, breast health, testicular health and campus safety/date rape sexual assault prevention.

Also joining the health fair were the ACLU, Recovery Resources, Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Trader Joe’s, Earth Fare, Safe Kids, Barnes & Noble, Century Cycle, Chica Bonita Vending and the Domestic Violence Center.

The Wellness Fair is presented by the WHS Wellness Committee, which includes Prevention Coordinator Kathy McGinty, Counselor Betsy Ruper, physical education teacher Marcia Faber, social studies teacher Beth Noren, science teacher Tricia Simon, Sean Bigley, Amanda Oswald, Darlene Papacjik and school Nurse Dorothy Beyer.
