Westlake Police Deliver Groceries To Senior Resident

The man did not respond to his daily call from police and officers were sent to check on him during this coronavirus outbreak.

WESTLAKE, OH — In late March, police delivered groceries to a local senior after he failed to respond to a check in call. The good deed was an extension of a Westlake program to protect residents.

Westlake police offer the "Are you OK?" program for seniors. City employees and police will contact seniors daily to ensure they're in good spirits and condition. The program has grown in importance during the new coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic.

On March 21, police tried repeatedly to contact a senior resident but could not reach him. Officers were sent to the man's home, but the senior was not inside. The postal carrier in the neighborhood said the man had been getting his mail regularly.

The resident later returned home and called Westlake police to say he just stepped out but he appreciated their concern. He told the dispatcher he was in need of groceries, so a Westlake police officer delivered the food and home supplies to the man's house.

The "Are you OK?" program is a collaboration between Westlake police and the Westlake Center for Community Services. Participants get a daily call to check on their well-being. If the call is not answered, police are notified and an officer is sent to the resident's home.
