Westlake Students' Art To Travel To New York City

Westlake students' masterpieces are heading to New York City this spring after a great showing at the 33^rd Cuyahoga County Region Scholastic Art & Writing Competition and Exhibition.

Twelve and four art students earned a total of 21 awards in the competition for seventh through 12th grade students. Those who won Gold Key and Portfolio awards will continue on to the national competition in New York for cash prizes, medals and scholarships.

Gold Key winners

• Sophomore Madeline Chernosky’s mixed media, “Self Portrait”
• Junior Allison Chonko’s jewelry, “Courage”
• Senior Daniel Dobish’s drawing, “Con-jumbled Cassettes” and his art portfolio
• Freshman Madeline Lee’s self-portrait drawing

Silver Key winners

• Senior Grace Galvin’s ceramics and glass, “Eugene,” ceramics and glass, “Layering Labyrinth” and digital art, “Free Yourself”
• Senior Ashley Kay’s digital art, “Mixed Feelings”
• Freshman Claire Turgeon’s untitled mixed media
• Senior Kelley Zhou’s painting, “Occupy Cleveland”
• Seventh-grader Gina Bowser's painting, “Dino"
• Eighth-grader Hallie Pohlman's sculpture, “My Name Is Pieces”

Honorable Mention awards 

• Senior Samantha Buck’s jewelry, “Love is the Breath that Sustains Us”
• Senior Daniel Dobish’s drawing, “Bad Decisions”
• Senior Samra Kajtezovic’s painting, “A Culture Confined”

• Seventh-grader Ben Sposet for his sculpture
• Eighth grader T.J. Withers for his photography, “Paper”

This year the Cuyahoga County competition received 1,737 individual art pieces and awarded 65 Gold key Awards, 112 Silver Key Awards and 211 Honorable Mentions.

Award-winning works of art will be on view at the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Reinberger Galleries through Feb. 4, courtesy of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The show is open Sundays 1 to 5 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday’s 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
