WHS Volleyball Teams Set, Bump, Spike to Fight Cancer
Volleyball teams from Westlake and North Olmsted raised funds for breast cancer research at Tuesday night's game.
All three volleyball teams put on their bright pink shirts for Volley for the Cure Tuesday night. The freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams from Westlake and North Olmsted and raised some money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure as part of their regular season.
Organizer Donna Fugo-Kumler, whose daughter plays on the varsity team, said she was not only hoping to do some fundraising, but also teach young women about breast cancer prevention.
“I’ve got all kinds of pamphlets and information,” she said, motioning to a stocked table in front of the gym doors.

Fugo-Kumler, a three-year breast cancer survivor, wanted to pay forward some of the kindness she received while fighting cancer.
“My philosophy is that when I was ill, there was so much kindness that you have to give back,” she said.

Students were also encouraged to wear pink to school during the day to show their support, and the stands and sidelines were filled with pink on both moms and dads.
“Real men wear pink,” Fugo-Kumler joked.
The Westlake girls won three sets with the final scores: 25-19, 22-25, 24-26, 25-23 and 15-7.
Athletic Director Tony Cipollone said that the proceeds from raffle, bake sale and T-shirt sales at the game will be sent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
