Woman Drives Drunk With Grandchild In Car, Westlake Police Say

When officers arrived on the scene, the woman was smoking cigarettes and struggling to stand, according to police.

WESTLAKE, OH β€” A 49-year-old woman is being charged with child endangering after she drove drunk with her granddaughter in her car, Westlake Police said. The woman crashed her car near Columbia and Sperry roads, leading to police investigating her.

Officers were called to the scene of a car accident at about 9:50 p.m. on August 6. They arrived and found that a Ford Explorer had hit another vehicle from behind. The driver of the SUV was leaning against her vehicle, smoking, when police arrived.

The driver, a 49-year-old woman from North Olmsted, was having trouble maintaining her balance. When she spoke, she slurred her words, police said. When officers asked how much she had drank, she reportedly said, "A lot."

The driver was field tested and then arrested for operating a vehicle impaired, failure to maintain an assured clear distance, and child endangering. She later took a breath test and was found to be well over the legal limit, police said.
