📰 News we're reading

• Company Shows 'Continuing Interest' in SOBE Assets (businessjournaldaily.com) — Downtown Youngstown customers of SOBE Thermal face uncertainty as the utility's receiver warns it may run out of money by November and could seek approval to abandon its steam system. Detroit Thermal is the only company showing strong interest in taking over, while city officials and the Ohio Consumers' Counsel challenge steep emergency rate hikes and lobby for state assistance.

• 'The YO' Film Puts City at Center of the Extreme Sports World (businessjournaldaily.com) — A new locally made documentary, "The YO," puts Youngstown and its daredevil extreme sports community front and center, from downtown stair sets to the Market Street Bridge. The film premiered to about 2,000 fans at Stambaugh Auditorium, where Mayor Derrick McDowell honored the Mizicko brothers on stage. The filmmaker is now submitting the movie to festivals and backing a push for a new outdoor skate park in Youngstown.

• 'Zombie' Foreclosures Are Most Common in These Midwestern Cities (lmtonline.com) — Youngstown tops a new national list for "zombie" foreclosures, with more than 12% of homes in foreclosure sitting vacant and abandoned. The report explains how owners leaving too early can create long-term eyesores that drag down neighboring property values, but also how experienced investors sometimes turn these distressed properties into opportunities. It also offers advice for struggling owners to avoid creating a zombie home.
