📰 News we're reading

1. Butler Institute of American Art announces 87th area artist annual call for entries (mahoningmatters.com subscription) — Youngstown artists and creatives within 75 miles are invited to submit up to two works to the Butler Institute's 87th Area Artist Annual by September 27, 2026, for a $30 fee. The free public exhibition opens December 13 with an afternoon reception and awards, offering local artists a chance to show work in a major American art museum.

2. How a strengthening El Niño can impact our upcoming Fall in Youngstown, Ohio (wkbn.com) — Youngstown residents can expect this fall to lean a bit drier than normal, with only a slight tilt toward warmer-than-average temperatures as El Niño strengthens. Meteorologists compare past El Niño years and current outlooks, suggesting our Valley may see fewer soaking systems but still experience occasional heavy rain and typical temperature swings into October and November.

3. Niles will receive $1M housing grant (tribtoday.com) — A new $1 million state grant to Niles will help build infrastructure for workforce housing serving employees of major Youngstown-area employers, including the Youngstown Air Reserve Station and Ultium Cells. For Youngstown residents, this investment could ease regional housing pressure and support people working at nearby job hubs while keeping commutes within the Mahoning Valley.

4. Hubbard graduate served in Army in Middle East (tribtoday.com) — A longtime Army veteran with roots across the Mahoning Valley now runs several convenience stores and a beer-and-wine shop while his son studies at Youngstown State University and helps with the family business. His story traces a path from helicopter missions in Iraq to small-business ownership in Girard, Niles, Mineral Ridge and Austintown, highlighting how military discipline shaped his life and work.
