1. YSU celebrates Hispanic National Heritage Month with a diverse selection of events (ysu.edu) — Youngstown State University is marking Hispanic Heritage Month with a full slate of events from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, starting with an opening ceremony at the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County. Local residents are invited to join campus groups and community partners in celebrating Hispanic and Latino histories, cultures, and contributions through talks, activities, and collaborations across Youngstown.
2. YBI Connector Event Links Businesses with Buyers (businessjournaldaily.com) — Youngstown business owners can connect directly with major buyers and learn how to win contracts at the Sept. 23 Connector event at the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County. Hosted by the Minority Business Assistance Center at YBI, the free session features procurement experts, agencies with active bids, and entrepreneurs sharing real-world contracting advice.
3. Youngstown Council Agenda Includes Grants, Property Sale, Abatements (businessjournaldaily.com) — Youngstown City Council will weigh a $350,000 grant to keep Village Plaza Sparkle Market open and prevent a neighborhood food desert, while also considering incentives to bring BBM Railway Equipment jobs into the city. Members will also vote on selling the former Bottom Dollar Food building to Potential Development School and renewing several local tax abatements.
4. Lamppost Program Connects Local Farms with Schools (businessjournaldaily.com) — A new farm-to-school breakfast pilot at South Range Schools is bringing locally raised eggs and sausage to students twice a week, with Youngstown State University's dietetics program interested in studying its impact on learning and behavior. The effort, led by Lamppost Farm and Tierra Verde Farm, could expand to more Mahoning Valley districts and connect schools with additional local producers if the trial succeeds.
5. Youngstown juveniles nabbed after fleeing in stolen car (vindy.com) — A juvenile from Youngstown was arrested after Warren police chased a stolen Hyundai that had been reported taken from Youngstown, eventually stopping it near Packard Park. Five youths fled on foot but were all captured, with one facing multiple charges and the others released to their parents.
