City Of Tulsa: City Commemorates The 20th Anniversary Of 9/11 With Veterans Park Renaming Ceremony

This Saturday, City of Tulsa officials, and local veterans will rededicate Veterans Park at its new location at 1028 E. 6th Street, after a remembrance ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“The events of Sept. 11, 2001 called many brave men and women into action to serve their country,” Mayor G.T. Bynum said. “This new location of Veterans Park will honor those heroes, past and present, who have fought for our freedom.”

City officials chose the park’s new location based on its proximity to other important entities within the veteran’s community – the Tulsa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 577 and the American Legion Post 1.

The City Council approved the Mayor’s recommendation to change the name of “Centennial Park” to “Veterans Park” on August 25.

“This new park location will empower our veterans in Tulsa, by bringing more visibility, reverence, and accessibility to our memorials,” Joshua Starks, Veterans Chair for the City’s Human Rights Commission said. “This park will become the focal point of many veterans’ events and provide more space to install memorials in the future.”

The new Veterans Park signage will be unveiled following the 9/11 remembrance ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. in front of the VFW Post 577, 1109 E. 6th St.
