Superintendent Deborah Gist and American Federation of Teachers President Nancy Leonard surprised five support professionals to congratulate each for being named a finalist for the Tulsa Public Schools 2022 Support Employee of the Year. Board president Stacey Woolley also surprised the finalist in her district at Robertson Elementary School.Β

- Miranda Beachy, teacherβs assistant at Robertson Elementary School;
- Andrew Horowitz, library teacher assistant at Carver Middle School;
- Ilse Mendoza, zone manager on the Plant Operations team;
- Helen Lee, manager of strategic operations for safety, security, and prevention on the Operations team; and
- Jeff Cox, building grounds site supervisor at Will Rogers College High School.
American Federation of Teachers President Nancy Leonard said: βCongratulations to our five finalists on your amazing accomplishment. It is well deserved! I am extremely proud of you all as well as each and every support professional serving Tulsa Public Schools to ensure that every child, family, teacher, school leader, and team member has everything they need to be successful.β
The Support Employee of the Year award occurs as a result of a process that began in the fall of 2021 when a support employee was selected from each school and some district office departments. The Tulsa Public Schools Support Employee of the Year is a non-certified team member who exemplifies the district's core values of equity, character, excellence, team and joy.
The districtβs 2022 Support Employee of the Year will be announced in spring 2022.
Miranda Beachy is a teacherβs assistant at Robertson Elementary School. This is her second year at Tulsa Public Schools, and her co-workers describe her as a calming presence that brings light and joy to meetings, trainings, and classrooms every day.
Andrew Horowitz is a library teacher assistant at Carver Middle School. He began his career with Tulsa Public Schools as a substitute teacher in 2016 and joined Team Tulsa in 2017. He also enjoys serving as an academic bowl coach.
Ilse Mendoza is a zone manager on the Plant Operations team. She joined Team Tulsa in 2019 and has worked to bridge the gap between the districtβs Spanish-speaking and English-speaking employees by assisting team members in downloading and operating translation apps on their smartphones. Her supervisor says that Ilse shows compassion by her willingness to help everyone.
Helen Lee is manager of strategic operations for safety, security, and prevention on the Operations team. Helen joined Team Tulsa in 2018 as an Education Pioneers impact fellow. She is known for her kindness and empathy toward parents and team members. Her team describes her as a calm voice in the midst of a raging storm during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jeff Cox is a building grounds site supervisor at Will Rogers College High School and has been with Team Tulsa for four years. Jeff works diligently to keep the Rogers campus safe and clean for students and team members at all times. His co-workers commend him for his positive attitude and constant smile.Β
