NEWBERG, OR — A 20-year-old man from La Grande was shot to death in downtown Newberg Friday night, according to police. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified at this time.

Following reports of gunfire in the area, Jack Alan Burnell, 20, was found near South Main and West Second streets around 11:45 p.m. Jan. 12, police said. Burnell reportedly died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Burnell had been living in Newberg for the past year after moving from his Eastern Oregon hometown of La Grande, police said. He had no history of criminal activity in the area, though his record from La Grande shows a misdemeanor theft charge from 2015, in which Burnell is said to have admitted to the crime for the purpose of buying drugs.
