Taxpayers Need To Claim $1.7 Million Before Oct. 13, State Officials Say
In July, letters were sent to 9,000 Oregon residents notifying them they had uncashed tax refund checks with the state.

SALEM, OR — State officials on Monday sent out notice that thousands of Oregon taxpayers have yet to claim tax return dollars from the Oregon Department of Revenue.
Oregon tax return checks expire two years after issuance, yet there are still approximately 7,000 Oregonians who have yet to cash their checks, officials said; and once a tax return check expires, it becomes a bit more difficult to reissue.
Checks that expire on Oct. 13 will be sent to the Unclaimed Property Program at the Department of State Lands, officials said. To claim a check from that department, "taxpayers need a notarized claim and copies of identity-verifying documents," officials said.

Roughly 9,000 taxpaying residents — accounting for about $2 million in funds — were warned in July their checks were set to expire. Misplacing previously issued checks or not having a current address on file are the most common reasons for not cashing a refund check, according to Department of Revenue Accounting Manager Vickie McCarty-Snook.
"We still have more than 7,000 taxpayers with almost $1.7 million in expired checks," McCarty-Snook said in a statement. "We want these taxpayers to get their money before they have to take additional steps."

McCarty-Snook said residents who received an expiration notification need to either sign the letter they received and return it before Oct. 13, or call 503-947-0084 to request a new check.
