The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

Hello Beaverton! There's lots of news to share this morning. Let's get right down to it. I'm Merlin Douglass, your regular guest curator and I've got what you need to know right here.
First, today's weather:
A couple of afternoon showers. High: 55 Low: 44.
Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:
- Terrible news this morning as we are learning that two Southridge High School students were killed and another four people were injured, including a Washington County Sheriff's Office deputy, in a two car crash in Beaverton in the first few minutes of Wednesday. A Nissan Altima containing the students ran a red light at the intersection of Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway and Murray and hit a police vehicle at 12:30 A.M. Mathew Amaya, 17 and Juan Pacheco Aguilera, 16, were killed and four others were taken to the hospital. (OregonLive)
- Beaverton is one of four Oregon school districts seeking additional funding. Beaverton School District has a $723 million dollar bond on the ballot this May. The money will go for, among other things, seismic upgrades that would mean that schools would serve as community shelters in the event of a major earthquake. (KATU)
- Moberi, the Portland café specializing in fruit smoothies and acai bowls has opened a fourth location, this one in Beaverton. The new location in Cedar Hills is said to have served 650 customers in the first four hours it was open. The café, which seats a dozen people, is best known for its fresh and healthy offerings. (KOIN)
- Washington County will join a number of other Oregon counties this election by leaving the privacy sleeves out of the ballots mailed to voters. The sleeves were used previously to prevent election workers from seeing how citizens have voted. The change is a money saving move that no longer affects privacy as ballots are now opened by machine. (OregonLive)
- A Beaverton parent has started a petition to change the time school starts to later in the day. Clarissa Brock says her 14 year old starts school at 7:30 A.M. and she thinks that's too early. The petition asks that middle and high school start times be moved to 8 A.M. (KGW)

From my notebook:
- Moving to a new county, learning a new language and making a new life are never easy. Talib Zaidawi and his wife, Hala Alrubaye, owners of the Family Café in Beaverton are two people who have made that long and difficult journey and now celebrate their happiness this Ramadan. Read about the changes life has thrown at them and how they have handled them in this article for the Beaverton Downtown Association blog. (BDA blog)
- Friends, Beaverton's Patch Daily Digest needs some help from our community. If we are to be able to continue to bring you the news each day, we are going to have to find a business or two that would like to advertise with us. The rates are really reasonable and they reach people like you and me every morning at the breakfast table. To find out more please contact ash.the.copyartist@gmail.com.
