Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. COVID-19 numbers are increasing all around the state, according to new CDC data. The agency recommends those living in counties with high COVID rates to resume wearing masks indoors and take other precautions. The CDC site indicates that Washington County has a high community level of infection, with 263.8 cases per 100,000 residents. (KATU)
  2. Funding for an important subsidy for families may be cut if more people don't sign up. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (known as WIC) provides money for food, formula vouchers, nutritional counseling and more for low-income households. Washington County's WIC program has capacity to serve 24,000 additional people, and so the agency is seeking to raise awareness about the benefits and qualifications for eligibility. 3. And here's the latest on the possible incoming In-N-Out Burger on Beaverton Hillsdale Highway. Despite developers expanding the proposed site to make room for long queues, neighbors are still wary about a potential traffic increase. Concerns came from Kaiser Permanente executive director of facilities Jake Rosenberg as well as residents who live nearby at the June 16 meeting with Washington County. (Pamplin Media Group, subscription required)
  4. Rescue workers were forced to extract an individual after a motor vehicle accident Monday morning. The incident occurred near Highway 219 and Burkhalter. (Twitter)
  5. Get your dose of cuteness with a roundup of pets available for adoption locally, compiled by the Beaverton Patch. Picasso the cat, Pickle the kitten, Juno the terrier mix and others all await your cuddles.

Today in Beaverton:

  • Messy Art @ Beaverton City Library (main location) - Art is more fun when kids can let loose and get messy! Ages 2-8 are invited to create color burst art. (4 p.m)
  • Book Chat Happy Hour - Share your thoughts and reading list with fellow bookish folks via Zoom. Hosted by the Beaverton City Library. (5 p.m.)
  • Hillsboro Art Walk - Head to Downtown Hillsboro to peruse the galleries and stores, try new restaurants and listen to live music every first Tuesday. (5-8 p.m.)
  • Tuesdays are for trivia, and there are lots of events to be found around town. Below are just a few. Click the links to get the details.

From my notebook:

  • In local margarita news (my favorite type of news), Choza Tacos Y Cantina is heading our way soon! The restaurant/margarita purveyor currently is found in Bridgeport Village, but rumor has it there will be a Murrayhill location (and by "rumor" I mean a sign I saw in the restaurant). (Instagram)
  • Though many new retailers are opening their doors, others are closing. That includes Moonstruck Chocolate's Beaverton retail outlet, located in Beaverton Town Square. The Portland-owned company was recently purchased by a New York-based group. The shop will close July 8. (KATU)

Alrighty, you're all good for today! I'll be back in your inbox tomorrow morning with another update.
