🌱 Baby Orangutan Born At Oregon Zoo + The Reser Hosts Ukrainian Group

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Morning, people of Beaverton! It's me again, Ash DeMello, your host of the Beaverton Daily.

First, today's weather:

Cooler with periods of rain. High: 53 Low: 41.

Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Been to the Oregon Zoo lately? If not, here's a reason to put it on the list of your upcoming to-dos: The zoo welcomed a brand new orangutan baby on Wednesday, April 13. The Bornean orangutan mother, Kitra, and her bundle of furry joy are doing well. Staff are taking a hands-off approach to the birth, but they expect Kitra to allow them access to the baby within two weeks. (Portland Tribune)
  2. Get a preview of tonight's show at The Reser via OPB.org. DakhaBrakha is a Ukrainian folk music group set to perform this evening in Beaverton, bringing a greater understanding of Ukrainian culture and the country's current plight to our local community. Though the performance is sold out, The Reser's Executive Director, Chris Ayzoukian, says there might be limited tickets available at the box office before the show starts.
  3. The county is looking for your thoughts on two possible options for a realignment of Saltzman Road. Head to an online open house on May 8 to learn more about a) the Western Alignment, which involved building a bridge to align Saltzman Road with Laidlaw Road and 130th Avenue, or b) the Eastern Alignment which simply widens the existing Saltzman Road. Click over to Washington County to get details about the event and the project.
  4. Learn about one of the area's phenomenal teens via Beaverton Valley Times (click here if you have a paid subscription; click here for free access via your WCCLS card). Bethany's Isaac Choi is just 16, but he's got his future all mapped out. He's leveraging his position at top of the class at the Oregon Charter Academy (an online public school) to prepare for a medical career. But first, the United States Airforce. Tap over to the article to get inspired by Choi's drive and determination.
  5. Feeling like house shopping? See five local Beaverton-area properties on the market at Beaverton Patch. Click over to see a sweet little Somerset West starter home, a pretty condo near Villa Sport and a million-dollar Bethany five-bedroom.
