Bank Fraud. A Chase. A Crash. Beaverton Police Have 2 In Custody

It started when a man deposited a check that the bank suspected was fake. It ended with six cars being damaged in the chase that ensued.

It was Wednesday afternoon and Beaverton detectives were staked out by the Rivermark Community Credit Union. The night before, they had been tipped off by officials that a man had come in and opened an account with what they believed was a forged check.

The detectives suspected that the man would return on Wednesday to withdraw money.

After a while, he showed up, driven in a car by a woman who waited in the car. A second man also waited in the car.

The police and credit union had agreed to let the man withdraw money.

As he left the credit union and got into the car, police moved in, lights on, trying to box in the car.

Police say that the woman behind the wheel sped off, driving over curbs, striking several cars in the process. She was finally boxed in at SR 10 and Highway 217.

The woman had struck two unmarked detective cars, three civilian cars, and heavily damaged a marked patrol car.

Police say that the woman - 33-year-old Tasha Pitts - and the man who had gone into the credit union - 19-year-old John West - "are known to open bank accounts then deposit fake checks into the accounts.

"They then would take as much money as the bank would allow them to out of the account that the fake check was deposited in."

Pitts was taken into custody and is being held on a felony warrant out of Marion County.

West was brought to a local hospital with minor injuries and has not yet been charged.

The second man has been identified as 21-year-old James Dalton. He is is being held on a felony warrant for a parole violation.

The case is being referred to the Washington County District Attorney's Office. The investigation continues.
