Happy Wednesday, Beaverton! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 77 Low: 53.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. A man was found shot to death at the Beaver Creek Apartments early Monday morning. Police responded to the scene and found Rocky Harkins, 43, dead. Officers arrested the man's roommate, James A. Dewhurst, 38, on charges of second-degree murder. (KOIN)
  2. Vulnerable families will soon find it easier to get the help they need as the state prepares to create a co-located domestic violence and child abuse center in Washington County. The Family Justice Center (FJC) on 158th is the current resource for adult abuse victims, while victims of child abuse are directed CARES Northwest, located in North Portland. State officials recently allocated funds to establish a new facility that will bring both organizations into one location. FJC's president, Judy Willey, says separation of these services can act as a barrier to people getting the help they need. (Pamplin Media Group)
  3. Most of us are a bit tired of Zoom meetings and video calls— some more than others. Dozens of Beaverton parents demonstrated this feeling when they protested virtual meetings outside the Beaverton School District offices Monday night. Although board members have included written comments from the public submitted prior to scheduled Zoom meetings throughout the pandemic, protesters expressed the desire to make those comments live. A BSD spokesperson said it is considering the possibility of live public comments in the future. (KGW.com)
  4. Do you have a skill you'd like to share with the community? If so, the folks over at PCC may want you! School reps say its "Community Education Program is always searching for that next great instructor." The non-credit program currently offers classes such as Irish Gaelic, wine pairing and Ethiopian cooking. What are the keys to success in a role like this? It doesn't take a teaching degree, just a commitment to connecting with the community and perhaps a little humor. (Press Release Desk)
  5. Head over to Patch to find local furry friends who need a home. This week's selection includes a bonded pair of Siamese Snowshoe mix kittens, a friendly adult Terrier Chihuahua mix named Lydia and a young Puggle who goes by Brady. (Patch)
