🌱Beaverton City Park Fountain Grand Opening + Hillsboro Rosé Festival

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Hello Beaverton. Good to see you again. There is lots going on. Let's get started. I'm your regular guest curator, Merlin Douglass.

First, today's weather:

Shhh! Rumor has it there won't be rain today. Pass it on. High: 65 Low: 45

Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Sunset High School honored John Pelham, a former graduate, at its annual memorial baseball game on Saturday, as it does most years. Pelham was killed in Afghanistan in 2014 — only a year after graduation. This was the sixth memorial game dedicated to the former student as last year's game was canceled due to the pandemic. (KATU)
  2. A Tigard man has been arrested in connection with repeated robberies targeting mall kiosks in both the Washington Square Mall and in Clackamas Town Center. Earl Brim, 36, is currently lodged in the Washington County jail accused of stealing over $100,000 worth of merchandise between November 2021 and April 2022. He is also suspected of at least one additional burglary. (KPTV)
  3. Hillsboro is gearing up for its first Rosé Festival May 14. Fifteen Tualatin Valley wineries will be pouring their limited 2022 rosé releases along the third baseline at Ron Tonkin Field, home of the Hillsboro Hops, in the first ever rosé festival held in Hillsboro. Food and music will also feature prominently. (Sip Magazine)
  4. If you didn't get out to the Beaverton Farmers Market Saturday, don't worry, Tigard's got ya'. The Tigard Bull Mountain Farmers Market opens today to much fanfare and a plant sale. It is open from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. (Happening Next)
  5. The Beaverton Downtown Association is planning a wine walk around Old Town in the central downtown area on May 21. Ten different wineries will be featured at a variety of shops making this a sip and explore adventure in places you might not have visited before. Instructions, list of locations and tickets are available here.

Today in Beaverton:

  • Classical Close Up will perform twice Monday at the Tualatin Public Library. The program is designed so that musicians from the symphony can play in small settings and audience members can ask questions. These free sessions are specifically for kids ages 2 - 7 to learn more about music and instruments in a fun, interactive experience. (10:30 A.M. to 11:15 A.M. and 11:45 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.)
  • I Sing is performing a benefit concert this afternoon at The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts. The proceeds will benefit HomePlate Youth Services, Washington County's only nonprofit serving homeless teens. I Sing's mission is to share innovative and exceptional choral music while supporting local nonprofits. (3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.)
  • Looking for a peaceful forest setting for a run? Consider Hyland Woods, 30 acres with eight access points to the many soft, dirt trails dominated by tall fir trees. While you can hear the neighborhood in parts, the park has the feel of being far away from the noise and the concerns of civilization. (Portland Running)

From my notebook:

  • The City of Beaverton is planning a big party May 7 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. when the Beaverton City Park fountains are officially open once again. Lots of entertainment will be on hand along with art and other activities including photo ops with Aquaman and Ariel. A special fountain light show is scheduled at 7:50 P.M. (City of Beaverton)
  • Parkour isn't so much of a sport as it is an adventure involving traveling through a landscape by moving over, through and around objects that present themselves. It's certainly something someone could just go out and do but there are also lessons. Revolution Parkour, 5651 SW Arctic Drive, in Beaverton offers a variety of lessons including ones for beginners and drop in fees start at $5. (rvpkbeaverton)
