Hey, neighbors! Ash DeMello here with the latest edition of the Beaverton Daily.

First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy throughout the day. High: 78 Low: 57.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Forty firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire on the 1700 block of Southwest Harvey Way in Aloha on Thursday afternoon. Three homes were damaged in the blaze, with two affected families displaced. All people and pets escaped safely, although a firefighter was hospitalized for injuries. The cause is under investigation. (KOIN.com)
  2. Eater Portland's Brooke Jackson-Glidden reports that Farmer & the Beast is among the latest restaurants to sign up to join Matt's BBQ at the incoming Breakside cart pod. Other delicious options will be the Sushi burrito cart chain Let's Roll, and a new fry cart called Fry Bar. The pod is set to open this fall, and I've already got my fork out. (Eater Portland)
  3. Metro Councilors approved a variety of infrastructure upgrades when they met August 3, including plans that affect Beaverton. The group voted to add a new southbound lane to 217 from Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway to Route 99W and widen the Hall Boulevard overpass. Councilor Juan Carlos González, who represents Hillsboro and Forest Grove, voiced his dissent, suggesting the meeting was a practice in 'rubber-stamping.' (Pamplin Media Group)
  4. August 6 was International Beer Day, so it was a great time to hear about plans for a new beer festival coming to the area. The Westside Beer Fest will bring 30 craft breweries to the Wingspan Event & Conference Center. The three-day festival is planned for September 24 through 26. (Pamplin Media Group)
  5. The Beaverton Public Safety Center made a list of notable solar-powered buildings in the area, compiled by the Oregon Daily Journal of Commerce. Because it was one of the first all-electric commercial buildings in the region, contractors, designers and manufacturers faced a learning curve throughout the design/construction process. Although the Public Safety Building isn't considered truly 'net-zero' in its energy use, it utilizes no fossil fuels and adds resiliency to the power grid. (Daily Journal of Commerce)
