Beaverton Police, TVF&R Respond to Explosion April 24

Investigators say the garage explosion was related to the production of hash oil. One man has been arrested.

BEAVERTON, OR – Beaverton police arrested a man Monday night after he reportedly blew the garage door off his house in the 1400-block of Southwest Bonnie Brae Street in Beaverton. First reported as a gas water heater explosion, it was later determined by Beaverton police that the explosion was allegedly due to a hash oil production mishap.

Zachary A. P. Silva-Barrett, 37, has been charged with unlawful manufacturing, arson incident to manufacture, and eight counts of reckless endangerment, according to Beaverton police spokesman Mike Rowe. He is lodged at the Washington County Jail.

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue were first to respond to Silva-Barrett’s residence following the explosion shortly before 10 p.m. April 24. Silva-Barrett initially told investigators he was lighting his gas water heater when it exploded, sending the garage door into the street and knocking the sidewall off the foundation, Rowe said. Silva-Barrett was treated for burns and taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.

After Silva-Barrett was taken to hospital, Beaverton investigators found 13 butane tanks and other equipment for producing Butane Honey Oil (or hash oil), Rowe said, adding that police also found roughly 120 pounds of cannabis in the garage.

Upon his return home, he was arrested by BPD officers, Rowe said, noting the eight reckless endangerment charges are related to the adult female and seven children who were in the home at the time of the explosion.
