Beaverton Schools Settles Civil Rights Complaint

Plan adds more instruction time for students in special education classes

The Beaverton School District is settling a complaint filed by the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights that charged students with special needs were being deprived of education time.

The Beaverton Valley Times reports the district will offer an additional 15 hours of instruction this summer to more than 1,000 students.

"I think we got a win," one of the parents involved in the complaint and the father of an autistic child, Louis Feldman, told the paper.

The district had come under investigation because of allegations that students with special needs were often taken out of class and placed on the bus before the end of the day, cheating them out of education time.
