(Patch Media)

Hello all. It's me, Ash DeMello, your host of the Beaverton Daily — back in your inbox with all the most important things happening locally. Follow along for the latest...

First, today's weather:

Cloudy with a stray shower. High: 63 Low: 51.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Beaverton who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Beaverton Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. A Beaverton High School alum and Olympic track star was honored with a rare award on Friday, reports Mia Villanueva. The local high school awarded Mac Wilkins the Oregon 22 Heritage Trail Plaque from the World Museum of Athletics in recognition of his multiple Olympic medals and other athletic accomplishments. Wilkins is just one of 22 recipients statewide of the award. (Fox 12 Oregon)
  2. Reporter Troy Shinn shares remembrances from two locals who experienced the period of Japanese Internment during World War II. Cousins Ron Iwasaki, whose family started Iwasaki Bros. plant nursery in Hillsboro, and Dwight Onchi, a former Washington County sheriff's deputy, recount their experiences during that period in the Beaverton Valley Times. The Oregon State Legislature recently passed a bill in honor of that era of U.S. citizens of Japanese heritage, designating Highway 35 as the Oregon Nisei Veterans World War II Memorial Highway. The designation will become official on Aug. 13.
  3. Explore NOLA Doughnuts' recently-opened Beaverton location with KOIN's Kohr Harlan. The new eatery, located in Beaverton Town Square, serves lunch and drinks in addition to its signature New Orleans-inspired beignets. The location also offers brunch on the weekend.
  4. Vegetation management crews are hard at work throughout the county. These teams use shoulder mowers and brush cutters to trim back grass and other plants from the sides of the roads, keeping bike lanes clear and stop signs visible along with many other important services. Do you know of a road that could use some help from the vegetation management crews? Click over to the weekly newsletter to find out how to request the service. (LUT News)
  5. The data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics shows that Washington County has the second-lowest unemployment numbers in the state. At 2.91%, WashCo (the second most populous in the state) ranks just after Wheeler County (the least populous in the state). Nationwide, the unemployment rate sits at around 3.6%. (KOIN.com)
