Hello, neighbors! Welcome to October! There's fall in the air here at the Beaverton Daily, so settle in for your quick update.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 66 Low: 43.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Excellent news for Beaverton High School: An alum has donated $1.8 million to the school's Beaverton High School Success Fund. The donor, successful financial investor Scott Shleifer, graduated from BHS before heading out to study global economics at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Shleifer says he credits BHS as one of the two educational institutions that set him up for his success. (KGW.com)
  2. Tragedy ensued for a Beaverton family when a local woman died after a fall into Tumalo Creek. Sook Hui Lee, 74, was visiting Deschutes County when she fell off a 15-foot embankment into the creek below. Bystanders were able to pull the woman from the water and begin life-saving efforts. Rescuers performed CPR when they arrived, but they were unable to resuscitate Ms. Lee. (KTVZ)
  3. The Washington County Government reports that the site of a former homeless encampment has been sold. Prior to its purchase by the county in 2014, the property at 874 SW Baseline Road was a gas station and car wash. It served as a homeless encampment until recently, when it was closed for clean-up. The sale of the property to the owner of an adjacent property was approved by the county's Board Of Commissioners on Wednesday. (Press Release Desk)
  4. Are you struggling to pay rent in unincorporated Washington County? Kelcie Grega reports that a new county ordinance, passed on Tuesday, September 21, extends the 60-day tenant protection period in Senate Bill 278 by 30 extra days. Those looking for an extension must show proof to landlords that they've applied for rental assistance. The moratorium applies to more people than one might initially think. According to County Chair Kathryn Harrington, 40 percent of all rental units in Washington County are in unincorporated areas. (Pamplin Media Group)
  5. Head over to Pamplin Media Group to learn about a care facility in Tigard that's dedicated to COVID-19 patients. Kyle Emery, owner of Pacific Health & Rehabilitation, converted the focus of his facility in April 2020 under the guidance of the Oregon Department of Human Services. Ray Pitz reports that triaging patients at Pacific Health & Rehabilitation removes them from the general population and can reduce the spread of the disease. Read the article to find out how caretakers at the facility are coping with the challenges as frontline workers serve up to 70 pandemic patients daily.
