Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Beaverton School District announced the newest member of its team: incoming Superintendent Gustavo Balderas. He has served in the Eugene School District as well as in Edmonds, Washington and was named the 2020 National Superintendent of the Year. Balderas succeeds Don Grotting, who is set to retire at the end of June. (Beaverton Patch)
  2. Authorities have identified the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run that occurred Tuesday on Hall Boulevard and Farmington Road. Beaverton Police released an image of the vehicle the afternoon of the accident. By 3:25 PM on Wednesday, @WashCoScanner reported that police had contacted the driver, who was cooperating with investigators. (Twitter)
  3. A Washington County jury convicted a Tualatin man for murdering his mother in 2018, reports Zane Sparling. Michael Stuart Ross was also convicted of attempting to kill his brother and later hiring a hitman from jail to kill both his siblings. Sentencing for Ross is scheduled for April 1. (OregonLive)
  4. Some nurses at Providence St. Vincent's Hospital have had enough. Their labor union organized a picket on March 15 in response to pay that's lower than their counterparts at other nearby hospitals and lack of safe staffing provisions in their contracts.   • Way to go, people of Beaverton! The Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter has removed its incinerator because it didn't need it anymore. The incinerator was used to cremate euthanized animals. "This is reflected in the percentage of animals that have been reunited with their owners or placed in new homes after entering the shelter, which has increased from 62% in 2006 to 93% in 2020," writes WashCo's Health and Human Services Communications Coordinator Wendy Gordon.
