Burglar Steals Cigarettes, Attempts To Pay With Beer: Beaverton Police

William Carmichael allegedly smashed the front entryway glass of two Beaverton businesses Monday morning, but only stole 2 packs of smokes.

BEAVERTON, OR — A Hillsboro man was arrested Monday for allegedly breaking into two Beaverton businesses and stealing two packs of cigarettes, which he reportedly tried to pay for with two bottles of beer.

According to Beaverton police spokesman Mike Rowe, William Eugene Carmichael, 43, was taken to the Washington County Jail on two counts of burglary. His bail is set at $1,000.

Rowe said officers were first called to 10425 S.W. Beaverton Hillsdale Highway around 6:45 a.m., then to 10020 S.W. Beaverton Hillsdale Highway just after 7 a.m. — less than a quarter-mile away. At both locations, officers found broken glass and evidence of forced entry, Rowe said.

Only two packs of cigarettes were taken from the first location, which Carmichael reportedly attempted to pay for with two bottles of beer. Rowe did not indicate anything was stolen from the second location.

Officers learned Carmichael — at the time an unidentified suspect — could be walking east on the highway. Police found him around 7:15 a.m. and identified him based on cuts on both his hands, reportedly from breaking the glass. Carmichael reportedly was arrested without incident.
