Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- A bus driver from Beaverton is among six Oregon workers to file a lawsuit against the governor and Oregon Health Authority over COVID-19 vaccine mandates. According to the governor's mandate, the bus driver would be among those required to be fully vaccinated by October 18 in order to retain their job. The driver argues that they already had COVID-19 and thus have "natural immunity," rendering vaccination unnecessary. (KATU)
- A Beaverton man will be resentenced in a conspiracy to commit murder case, the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled Thursday. While awaiting trial for murder, Marcellus Ramon Allen allegedly asked a cellmate to kill a witness, with the cellmate recording some of the incriminating conversations. Though initially convicted for conspiracy, the ruling was overturned due to questions about the use of body wire evidence. This week, the Appeals Court ruled that the use of a wire was indeed acceptable, upholding the initial ruling. Head over to OregonLive to read the ins and outs of Allen's complicated legal proceedings.
- Elizabeth Miller reports on questions regarding educational provisions for kids sent home for COVID-19 exposure or positive tests. Though BSD shared that quarantined students will have access to online learning resources and an educator "for support," there are no final plans in place. Along with Portland Public Schools, BSD is still in the process of ironing out the details with the unions that represent licensed educators. (OPB News)
- Wondering what's going on in City Hall these days? The City of Beaverton posted an update recently outlining the take-homes from last Tuesday's City Council meeting. Highlights included proclamations regarding Welcoming Week and National Preparedness Month. The group also discussed possibilities for creating more affordable housing. (Facebook)
- File this under "Good to Know": The Washington County dispatch center, which is the agency that triages emergency calls for our area, accepts texts as well! So, if you're unable to call 9-1-1, texting 9-1-1 will also connect you to emergency responders. The agency notes that "texting should ONLY be used when you are unable to make a voice call to 9-1-1."
