Good morning, neighbors! Ash DeMello here with the latest copy of the Beaverton Daily.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 57 Low: 45.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Below are links to the multiple sources carrying stories about the Legionnaires' disease outbreak in the Murrayhill neighborhood:
    • Legionella bacteria, which causes the lung infection, is naturally found in freshwater but can get into the plumbing system and cause people to fall ill. Four people have been hospitalized with the illness in Beaverton, health officials say, and six have been diagnosed. All of the affected individuals live within two miles of Murray Boulevard and Scholls Ferry Road. (KATU)
    • Beaverton Patch reports that, on average, 10 percent of people diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease die from the condition.
    • Washington County says that person-to-person transmission is extremely rare with this bacteria. Health officials are working to identify a common source of exposure.
  2. A sweet story out of Bethany Elementary: "He's born into a world that just, in some ways, is not built for him," said the father of 6-year-old Julian Worsham, who has dwarfism. A lunch worker at his school noticed a need for a better cart to help Julian collect his lunch and put her metalworker husband to task on building an alternative. His teacher likewise got resourceful in accommodating the kindergartener, calling upon her resources to help get Julian a new chair. See the innovations over at KGW.com.
  3. Catch up with the internationalization efforts at PCC with an article at the Press Release Desk. The school is hosting three upcoming events to help students and faculty develop a balanced, international perspective on topics like refugees, differing political views and more. Ron Bekey, computer information systems instructor and the college's Internationalization Steering Committee chair, notes that being able to navigate a variety of perspectives and cultures will give students an edge in their future careers.
  4. From Washington County Land Use and Transportation, we get safety tips and reminders for the upcoming holiday — both for drivers and pedestrians. The agency also posted a Pedestrian Bicycle Strategic Funding Program open house/survey where you can learn about upcoming projects and add your two cents. Finally, there are two projects starting next week that you might have to plan around:
    • Possible delays on Bethany Boulevard, between Bronson and West Union roads, November 2 and
    • Possible delays on Fischer Road, west of Highway 99W, also on November 2.
  5. Aurora alert! You might want to get yourself away from the city lights for the opportunity to catch the results of Thursday's powerful solar flare. Andrew Weil reports the possibility of visible geomagnetic storm effects on Saturday in Oregon! (KGW)

  • Did you know there's a satire publication called The Beaverton? I'm constantly stumbling upon it while searching for news articles for the Daily. Think The Onion, only Canadian. Might be worth a flip-through if you're having a lazy Saturday morning.
  • Beaverton Education Foundation reminds folks that it's 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 Phone-a-Thon time again— a campaign that funds innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs for all students in Beaverton's public schools. Take a look at the event's signage over the years at BEF's Instagram.
