Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:
- Log on to Pamplin Media Group to read September 2's collection of Letters to the Editor and find out what's on the minds of people in our area. Touchy topics include words in defense of animal testing, fears regarding return to school and indoor dining and who people think should fill the vacant spot in City Council. All in all, it's less caustic than your average Nextdoor post. (Pamplin Media Group)
- May's election didn't quite cut it for filling the empty seat in City Council. Jerome Sibayan and Ashley Hartmeier-Prigg are facing off once more after Hartmeier-Prigg narrowly failed to secure the 50 percent of votes that were necessary to claim the vacant spot. Voters' ballots are due no later than 8:00 PM on September 21. (Pamplin Media Group)
- If you haven't heard about free lunches for all BSD students already, you might feel the extra cash in your wallet once school starts. In fact, every Oregon public school district is offering the program, regardless of family income. A BSD spokesperson said that families wouldn't need to register for the program; kids can just pick up food at school if they need it. (OregonLive)
- Read about food as culturally diverse as we are in the latest edition of the Beaverton Farmers Market newsletter. The article highlights Eleni Woldeyes's Ethiopian Tacos, Creole Me Up's selection of pickled vegetables, marinades and cocktail mixes and Kazy's OH!NIGIRI's adorable and delicious rice ball creations. (I think I know where I'll be Saturday morning!)
- Head over to the Washington County Visitors' Association site to find out the latest data on tourists in our region. The organization reports that hotel stays were down a bit to around 72 percent occupancy as summer draws to a close. The numbers are up overall, though, compared to last year's occupancy rate of just over 50 percent during the last week of August.
