🌱City's First Permanent Shelter + Election Results

Welcome to the Beaverton Daily— your go-to for the lowdown on all things Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Happy Thursday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know going on in Beaverton today.

First, today's weather:

Very windy; periods of rain. High: 57 Low: 48.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. As most of you know, the first Tuesday in November is Election Day around the country. Washington County Government shared the link to the unofficial results for November 2, 2021, over at the Press Release Desk. The measures on this year's ballot affected Lake Oswego and Banks primarily, except for one TVF&R emergency bond measure, which appears to have passed by a comfortable margin.
  2. Where to Eat This Week by Willamette Week reminds you that At The Garages on SW Western Avenue is really awesome, and you should go to there. On top of live music and sometimes comedy, the venue features a solid array of food carts. Menu items include "a torta that's the size of a basketball," and a tempting American-style Bolognese.
  3. I love this tagline: "What if all of Beaverton read the same book?" The City Of Beaverton is getting ready to kick-off One Book, One Beaverton, offering free copies of The Cold Millions by Jess Walter starting November 13. Walters is also author of the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Ruins. (Press Release Desk)
  4. The West Side is being represented at COP26, the 2021 United Nations climate change conference. PCC Sylvania Multicultural Center coordinator, Mak Porotesano, is headed to Scotland as a member of the Pacific Islander delegation with the Pacific Climate Warrior team from 350.org. Read more about Porotesano's work at the Press Release Desk.
  5. Beaverton has secured funds for its first permanent homeless shelter, just in time for winter, according to KOIN.com. The funding means that now city workers are scoping out possible locations and working to update city code to accommodate a site like this. Not-so-fun fact to consider from Mayor Beaty: In our area, the average person experiencing homelessness is a 70-year-old woman.
