Welcome back, Beaverton! Here's everything you need to know to get this Friday started off right.

First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 100 Low: 70. There's an excessive heat warning for the area through Saturday.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Joshua Friant helped an 88-year-old Aloha woman escape from a burning home Wednesday. Friant was the first to arrive on the scene, where he found her stuck, unable to move without her walker. He crawled along the floor to reach her and then helped her stay low, below the smoke, to exit the home. The woman was evaluated at a local hospital and is in good condition. (KATU)
  2. Find out how U.S. 'opportunity zones' are affecting Beaverton. The program uses tax breaks to incentivize developers to build in areas that struggle economically. Beaverton was tagged for the program after the 2010 census, but some industry pros think 'opportunity zone' incentives should go toward more deserving locales. (The Conversation CA)
  3. KOIN offers some weather updates for the weekend, plus updates on how to make the most of peak farmers market season. The Beaverton Farmers Market's Ginger Rapport talks about COVID safety while shopping, pet policies and what's in season right now (hint: melons, garlic, even apples!). (KOIN.com)
  4. Another festival has wilted in view of the COVID-19 uptick. Westside Beer Fest announced its cancellation due to rising infections. The event was scheduled for September 24-26 at the Wingspan Event & Conference Center. (Pamplin Media Group)
  5. In case you haven't heard yet, masks are back starting Friday. Governor Kate Brown mandates masks for everyone five and older in all indoor public spaces beginning August 13. (Pamplin Media Group)
