Don't Use Illegal Fireworks This Holiday Weekend, Police Say

BEAVERTON, OR — Beaverton police on Thursday issued a notice and reminder to would-be Independence Day revelers not to use illegal fireworks this Fourth of July holiday.

Specific patrols will be on-hand Tuesday evening to enforce the city's laws regulating the use and possession of illegal fireworks, police spokesman Mike Rowe said in a statement, noting that Oregon law bans the possession, use, or sale of fireworks that fly, explode, or travel more than 6 feet on the ground or 12 inches in the air.

Bottle rockets, Roman Candles, and firecrackers are illegal in Oregon, Rowe said. The only fireworks allowed are those sold at authorized fireworks retailers.

Anyone found with illegal fireworks could face arrest and criminal prosecution, he said, and they could be held liable for any damages caused by the fireworks as well. Even parents of kids who may possess illegal fireworks could be held responsible for any damages caused by their children.

Beaverton City Code 5.15 prohibits excessive noise between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Violation of this code could result in a maximum civil fine of $1,000.00. The non-emergency number for dispatch to report any illegal fireworks is 503-629-0111.
