Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:
- Expect a change in emergency alerts from the Washington County government. The agency announced its transitioning to the Everbridge system for releasing urgent information regarding severe weather, critical utility outages like boil water notices, missing persons, evacuations and other public safety situations. - Beaverton was among three cities honored for downtown revitalization by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department's Excellence on Main Street awards, as reported by Ray Pitz. Lauren and Ben Reese, owners of Lionheart Coffee, received one of just two of the organization's Business Heroes awards. The City of Beaverton and the Beaverton Downtown Association received an Outstanding Public Private Partnership Award. Find out the other recipients over at Pamplin Media Group.
- Football standings are shaken after an eventful weekend in local high school sports. Wade Evanson writes about losses suffered by Sunset, Glencoe and Tualatin. Lake Oswego unseated Tualatin for the top spot in the OSAA Football Rankings with their win. (Pamplin Media Group)
- Say "miyo pwoc" (that's congratulations in the Acholi language) to a local teen for her efforts to build a library in Gulu, Uganda. Katelyn Povolny's efforts to raise money started as part of her Action Project at Rachel Carson Middle School, but she continued fundraising through the summer, exceeding her goal by $5,000. In total, Katelyn gathered over $19,000 along with many community-building items for the building, scheduled for construction at the end of this year. She says she's planning on making a visit next summer. (District News)
- Yesterday marked the first official Indigenous People's Day in Oregon. In honor of the occasion, Beaverton School District shares a Westview senior's thoughts about her Native American heritage. Hear Madison Lohn's reflections on the change from Columbus Day and the extra chance she had to connect with her Salish and Kootenai roots during the pandemic. (District News)
