Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- A Beaverton man heads to Linn County Circuit Court on Tuesday. Adam Chervin, 29, is accused of unauthorized use of a vehicle, first-degree robbery, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and fourth-degree assault. Witnesses say Chervin accepted a ride from a man in a Honda Civic on May 5, then assaulted the driver and stole the car. He was arrested May 6, still in possession of the Civic. (Corvallis Gazette Times)
- Local businesses are being targeted by fake reviews, and they say Google isn't doing enough to fix it. Around 20 pest control companies in the Portland area say they've received fraudulent bad reviews via Google, including four out of Beaverton. Prime Pest Solutions' owner, Sam Burton, used an investigator to determine that the cyberattacks were most likely orchestrated by a former employee working through an overseas company. Burton says he's contacted Google, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Oregon Department of Justice and several law firms without much in the way of results. - A number of high schools in our area deserve pats on their figurative backs, thanks to Niche.com's high rankings, as reported in Portland Business Journal. Sunset High School, St. Stephens and Westview all ranked within the primo 25 slots. Top contenders included Valley Catholic at the ninth spot, the International School of Beaverton at number seven and the School of Science and Technology at five. In total, Beaverton schools accounted for six of the top 25 high schools in the state. (Portland Business Journal)
- Washington County wins the day for the highest COVID-19 vaccination rate in the state of Oregon. The county has been in the lead for a while now but just reached the 80 percent mark this week, with a majority of adults having had their shots. One spokesperson attributes the milestone in part to local agencies' focus on harder-to-reach communities, including migrant farm workers and unsheltered people. (Pamplin Media Group)
- New sidewalks are in store for Southwest Laurelwood Avenue, a treacherous route for pedestrians that Mayor Beaty went so far as to call "a crazy street." City Council okayed the final design for the project last week, signing off on a 5 foot wide continuous sidewalk along one side of the street between Southwest Scholls Ferry Road and Apple Way. The project is scheduled for the end of 2022. (Pamplin Media Group)
